AI has been a buzzword in the tech world for some time, and Google’s latest offerings take it to the next level. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro represent a generational leap forward. As expected, they outperform their predecessors, not only in terms of features but also in price and maturity. Google’s ambition sets the stage for what’s yet to come, with more AI features anticipated in the near future.
The AI innovations in the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 go beyond the current capabilities. Google Photos, a familiar app, is now equipped with an array of new AI models, exclusive to these models. To unlock these features, all you need to do is charge your phone overnight while connected to Wi-Fi. Once done, you’ll have access to extensive editing options through the Magic Editor. This is AI-driven editing at its finest, with tools that allow you to remove objects, adjust lighting, resize subjects, and more with just a tap. It’s like having your own professional photo editor in your pocket.
Magic Editor, however, doesn’t work equally well with all photos, particularly those taken with older phone cameras that lack the necessary data and lighting for the AI magic to shine through. For the best results, stick with new photos captured by the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8.
The camera hardware in both phones has also seen significant improvements. The Pixel 8 Pro boasts a powerful trio of a 50-megapixel wide lens, a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 48-megapixel telephoto lens, while the Pixel 8 features a 50-megapixel wide lens (same as the Pro) and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens. This differentiation sets the two models apart, with the rest of the specs and software being largely similar.

One noteworthy feature is ‘Best Take,’ which intelligently selects the best shot from a series of photos taken before and after pressing the shutter button. This ensures that you capture the perfect moment, even if you missed it in real-time.
For video enthusiasts, the Pixel 8 series introduces Audio Magic Eraser, an AI-powered tool that can detect and reduce unwanted background noise in recordings, enhancing the overall audio quality.

While it may not eliminate all noise, it makes a noticeable difference.
The introduction of Video Boost is a highly anticipated feature, although it’s set to arrive later. It will allow you to upload your videos to Google’s servers for advanced processing, including color correction, stabilization, grain control, and lighting adjustments. It’s a promising addition that will require fast upload speeds for processing 4K videos.

In terms of performance, the Tensor G3 chip in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro is a powerhouse, excelling in AI-driven tasks. Compared to its predecessor, the Tensor G2, it delivers superior performance with better heat management. While it can still heat up during intensive tasks, it’s a significant improvement.

Both models offer enhanced connectivity with an updated modem, providing stable 5G and Wi-Fi connections. The Pixel 8 Pro’s 5,050mAh battery ensures excellent battery life, while the Pixel 8’s 4,575mAh battery offers slightly less screen time. Fast charging is available, with wired charging providing quicker results.
Design-wise, the phones feature flat displays, departing from the curved displays seen in many competitors. The Pixel 8 Pro’s display is notably brighter and offers a dynamic refresh rate, enhancing the viewing experience.

The Pixel 8’s satin metal frame and the Pixel 8 Pro’s polished aluminum frame, along with their color options, add to their appeal. Notably, the Pixel Thermometer app, utilizing a temperature sensor on the phone, is a fun addition for checking the temperature of objects.

One drawback is the lack of display out support through the USB-C port, a feature that some competitors are introducing.
While the entry-level storage capacity is 128GB, it would have been more appealing to see Google offer 256GB as the base option. This aligns with the demands of users who seek more storage.

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are not just phones for the present; they are forward-looking devices. Their AI-driven features, particularly in video editing, set them apart. These phones have matured significantly, with differentiation between the two models to cater to diverse user preferences.

Google’s focus on AI in photography and other areas positions them as strong contenders in the smartphone market.
The competition, including the Samsung Galaxy S23 series and the Apple iPhone 15, will have to respond to Google’s AI-centric approach. While Google’s approach is compelling, it won’t be easy for other Android manufacturers to replicate.”
